What Is a Commode? Types, Meaning and Sizes

One word, three meanings

In South Asian and much of African usage, a commode is the western sitting toilet — the ceramic pan you sit on, as distinct from the squat pan. Ask for a commode in a Morbi showroom or a Lagos builders merchant and this is what you will be shown.

In older British and American furniture usage, a commode is a low chest of drawers, and separately a chair with a chamber pot concealed under the seat — the sense that survives in hospital supply catalogues, where a commode chair is a mobile bedside toilet for patients who cannot walk.

For ordering purposes only the first meaning matters, and it is worth writing WC or water closet on a purchase order instead. Sanitary ware price lists in India use commode freely; export documentation should not.

Types of commode we manufacture

• One-piece commode — Pan and cistern moulded as a single unit. No joint to leak or collect dirt, and the easiest shape to clean. The premium residential choice.
• Two-piece commode — Separate cistern bolted onto the pan. Cheapest to buy, easiest to ship, and either half can be replaced on its own if it cracks.
• Wall-hung commode — Mounted on a concealed frame with the cistern inside the wall. The floor runs clear underneath, which makes a small bathroom read larger and much easier to mop.
• Floor-mounted EWC — Bolted to the floor with an exposed cistern. The volume seller across our export markets on price and simplicity.
• Squat pan — The traditional Indian WC, set into the floor. Still specified in large numbers for public buildings, institutions and budget housing.
• Anglo-Indian / dual pan — A hybrid designed to be used either seated or squatting, common in transitional markets.
