Why it replaced polished concrete

A real polished concrete floor is a structural element being asked to be a finish. It shrinks as it cures and cracks where it wants to, not where you would like it to. It is porous, so oil and wine go into it rather than onto it. It dusts unless it is densified and sealed, and the seal wears in the traffic lines and has to be redone.

Porcelain removes every one of those problems. The tile is fired, dimensionally stable and impervious, and it arrives with its surface already final. Movement is handled by the joints between tiles rather than by cracks across the floor.

What it keeps is the look: the soft cloudiness of a power-floated slab, the faint tonal drift, the occasional darker pour mark. Good concrete-effect tiles are printed from enough faces that the variation reads as a single continuous pour rather than a repeating pattern — which is exactly the test a large open-plan floor applies.

The format matters here more than in most effects. Concrete is a poured material with no natural unit size, so the bigger the tile and the tighter the joint, the more convincing it is. At 800x1600 mm with 2 mm rectified joints it reads as a slab.

Yes — the better ones carry a structured surface registered to the print, so the concrete texture is felt as well as seen. Finishes run from an almost smooth power-floated look to a coarse board-marked relief, with the more textured versions reaching R11 for outdoor use.
