What makes a marble-effect tile convincing

Face count. A cheap marble tile is printed from three or four faces, so the same vein pattern repeats every few tiles and the eye picks it up immediately across a floor. Ours are printed from dozens, which is what stops a large floor reading as wallpaper.

Format. Marble veining is long. At 300x300 mm every vein is cut off within a few centimetres and the illusion collapses. At 600x1200 mm and above, a vein can run most of a metre and a half, which is what real stone does.

Edge treatment. Through-edge printing carries the design onto the ground edge of the tile, so the joint between two tiles reads as a vein rather than a seam. Combined with rectified edges and a 2 mm joint, that is what makes a large floor look continuous.

Book-matching. Supplied as mirrored pairs that open like the pages of a book, imitating how a quarried block is sawn and unfolded. On a feature wall it is the single most convincing thing a porcelain tile can do.

Do marble effect tiles look like real marble?

At standing height and in large formats, convincingly so — particularly when printed from many faces with through-edge printing and laid with 2 mm rectified joints. Close up the repeat becomes visible on cheaper tiles; that is what face count buys.

Are marble effect tiles better than real marble?

For any working floor, yes. Real marble etches on contact with anything acidic, stains because it is porous, and needs resealing every year or two. Marble-effect porcelain does none of that and costs a fraction as much.

What is book-matched marble?

Two tiles or slabs printed as mirror images of each other. Laid side by side the veining opens symmetrically like the pages of a book, imitating how a quarried marble block is sawn and unfolded.

Can marble effect tiles be used in a bathroom?

Yes, and they are ideal there — real marble is at its worst in a bathroom because of the acids in cleaning products and toiletries. Use a matt or textured finish on the floor for slip resistance and gloss on the walls.

Can marble effect tiles be used on a marble wall feature?

Yes, and full-height marble walls are the strongest use of the range. Large formats and book-matched pairs let the veining run continuously up a wall, which is exactly what real marble slab does and what a small tile cannot.
