Tile and Slab Countertops — Heights, Materials and Detailing
Porcelain has quietly taken the worktop market from granite and quartz, for a reason neither of them can answer: it is the only common counter material that is simultaneously heat-proof, acid-proof, stain-proof and UV-stable. The design work is all in the edge and the substrate.

Why porcelain slab took the worktop market
Granite stains, because it is porous, and it needs sealing. Quartz is a resin composite, so a hot pan will scorch it and sustained sunlight will yellow it. Marble etches on contact with lemon juice. Laminate swells at any cut edge that meets water. Every one of those is a normal kitchen event.
Porcelain has none of those failure modes. It is fired clay — nothing in it can burn, absorb, etch or fade. You can set a pan straight off the hob onto it, cut on it (though it will blunt the knife), spill wine on it overnight, and run it straight out to an outdoor kitchen in full sun.
What it cannot do is take a point impact on an unsupported edge. A 12 mm slab is strong in the plane and vulnerable at a corner, so the substrate has to be continuous and the edge has to be detailed properly — a mitred return, a bonded double edge, or a metal or timber trim. That is the whole skill of the installation, and it is where a cheap fabricator gets it wrong.
For project work the economics compound: the same slab gives the worktop, the splashback and often the floor, all from one design, shipped in the same container as the tiles.

Getting a tiled counter right
- Epoxy grout, without exception — A worktop joint in cement grout absorbs food, grease and colour, and cannot be brought back. This is the single decision that determines whether a tiled counter still looks good in year three.
- Fewest possible joints — Use the largest format the run allows, and set it out so no joint lands where the chopping happens.
- Continuous substrate — Marine ply or a cement board over a full carcass. A tile bridging a gap will crack at the first heavy pan.
- Detail the edge deliberately — A mitred return reads as solid stone; a bonded double edge gives visual thickness; a trim is honest and cheap. An unfinished cut edge is none of the three.
- Upstand or full height, never a gap — The junction between counter and wall is where water gets in. Seal it with a coved upstand or run tile to the wall units.
- Template on site — Walls are never square. A worktop cut to drawing will show a wedge-shaped gap at the back wall.

Can you use tile for a countertop?

Is porcelain better than granite or quartz for a worktop?
On durability, clearly. Granite is porous and needs sealing, quartz scorches under a hot pan and yellows in sunlight, and marble etches from lemon juice. Porcelain does none of those. Its one weakness is a point impact on an unsupported edge, which is a detailing problem rather than a material one.
How thick should a porcelain worktop be?
12 mm is standard on a continuous substrate; 20 mm where the slab spans or where a heavier edge profile is wanted. Visual thickness beyond that comes from a mitred return rather than from a thicker slab.
