A water closet is the toilet itself — the ceramic pan that flushes waste into the drain. The term is older than the appliance most people picture, and it still appears on every architectural drawing, plumbing schedule and sanitary ware price list, which is why it is worth being precise about.
Water closet, lavatory, bathroom, restroom
A water closet — WC — is strictly the toilet fixture and, by extension, the small room containing it. The name comes from the nineteenth century, when a flushing pan was first installed in a closet-sized room of its own, and it stuck in the trade even as the domestic language moved on.
A lavatory, confusingly, originally meant the wash basin, not the toilet. In American usage it drifted to mean the whole room; in plumbing specifications it still often means the basin. If a drawing lists "1 WC, 1 lavatory" it is almost certainly specifying one toilet and one wash basin, not two toilets.
Bathroom means a room with a bath in it, which is why a room with only a toilet and basin is properly a cloakroom or powder room rather than a bathroom. Restroom and washroom are the polite public-building terms. On a purchase order, none of this ambiguity is acceptable — so the trade uses WC, and means the pan.

What to confirm before ordering a water closet
- Trap type — S-trap discharges through the floor, P-trap through the wall. This is not interchangeable — get it wrong and the pan will not connect.
- Rough-in distance — The distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet. Standard is 300 mm or 400 mm on S-trap; confirm against the existing drainage.
- Flush type — Flush tank or flush valve, single or dual. Dual flush needs adequate supply pressure to clear the pan on the short flush.
- Seat fixing — Top-fix or bottom-fix. Wall-hung and back-to-wall pans usually need top-fix because there is no access underneath.
- Cistern included or separate — Two-piece closets are often quoted pan-only. Check whether the price includes the cistern and the fittings.
- Water spot and trap seal — A larger water surface keeps the pan cleaner; a deeper trap seal is better at blocking odour where the drain run is long.
