Poured terrazzo and the porcelain version

Real terrazzo is marble, granite or glass chips set into a cement or resin binder, poured in place, then ground and polished flat once cured. It is seamless, extremely durable and genuinely lovely — and it takes weeks, needs a specialist contractor, and costs several times what a tiled floor does.

Porcelain terrazzo reproduces the chip scatter as a printed and pressed surface. You lose the seamlessness and gain everything else: a fixed price, a floor that is finished when the grout cures, no sealing, and the ability to replace a damaged tile instead of patching a poured surface.

The design has come back strongly in the last few years, and the porcelain versions have improved with it — chip density, chip colour and ground tone are all now produced across a wide range rather than the single grey-and-white terrazzo of institutional corridors.

Our full body terrazzo is worth noting specifically: because the aggregate is pressed through the body rather than printed on it, the chips continue into a cut edge. That lets a mitred corner or a ground skirting read as one continuous material, which a printed tile cannot do.
