What Are Vitrified Tiles? Meaning, Types and Benefits

Vitrified means glass-like. A vitrified tile has been fired until the minerals in its body melted and fused, closing the pores and leaving something far closer to glass than to fired earth — which is where every property buyers value comes from.

What vitrification actually means

The word comes from the Latin vitreum, glass. Vitrification is the process of heating a clay body containing silica and feldspar until those minerals melt and flow into the spaces between the clay particles, then cooling it so they set as a glassy phase binding everything together.

The result is a body with almost no open porosity. Water absorption falls below 0.5 per cent, breaking strength rises sharply, and the tile becomes effectively impervious — it cannot take up water, so it cannot be stained from within, cannot be split by freezing, and does not need sealing.

That 0.5 per cent threshold is the same one the European standards use to define porcelain. Vitrified tile and porcelain tile are the same class of product under two regional names: vitrified across India, the Gulf and much of Africa, porcelain in Europe and North America.

The four types of vitrified tile

All four share the dense vitrified body. They differ only in how the visible surface is made — and that changes the price by a factor of two or more.

The same printed tile polished to a high gloss. The brightest floor available, and not suitable for wet or external areas.

Why vitrified tiles are specified

  • Water absorption below 0.5% — Impervious in practice, so no sealing, no staining from within and no frost damage.
  • High breaking strength — Typically above 1300 N, which is what lets a tile bridge small imperfections in a screed without cracking.
  • Abrasion resistance — Full body and double charged bodies keep their appearance under traffic that wears a printed glaze through.
  • Dimensional accuracy — Rectified vitrified tiles can be laid with 2 mm joints, which is what makes large-format floors read as continuous.
  • Chemical resistance — Unaffected by the alkaline detergents used in commercial machine cleaning.
  • Indoors and out — The same body can run from an interior floor onto a terrace, which no porous ceramic can do.

What are vitrified tiles made of?

Clay, silica, feldspar and quartz, milled together into a slurry, spray-dried into a fine powder, pressed under high pressure and fired above 1200 degrees Celsius. The feldspar is the flux that melts and vitrifies the body.

Are vitrified tiles better than ceramic?

For floors, wet areas and outdoors, yes — a porous ceramic body simply cannot do those jobs. On a dry interior wall a ceramic tile is cheaper and perfectly adequate, so better depends on where the tile is going.

What are the types of vitrified tiles?

Full body, double charged, GVT (glazed vitrified) and PGVT (polished glazed vitrified). All four have the same dense body; they differ in whether the surface is pigmented through, pressed as a layer, or digitally printed and glazed.

Do vitrified tiles need sealing?

Unpolished ones do not — the body is too dense to absorb anything. Polished vitrified tiles are the exception, because polishing opens fine surface pores; a sealer applied before grouting keeps pigment out of them.
