How to Fix Cracked Tiles — Repair or Replace
Before repairing anything, work out why it cracked. A tile that cracked because something heavy was dropped on it is a repair. A tile that cracked because the floor beneath it is moving will crack again, and so will the one you replace it with.
Why tiles crack
Impact is the obvious cause and the least worrying: something heavy landed on a single tile, the crack radiates from one point, and the neighbours are fine. Replace it and the problem is over.
Substrate movement is the serious one. A screed that is still curing, a timber floor that flexes, or a concrete slab with no movement joints will crack tiles in a line, often following a joint in the structure beneath. Replacing tiles without addressing that guarantees repeat failures in the same place.
Voids under the tile are the most common cause on a floor that seems otherwise sound. If adhesive was spot-bedded rather than fully combed, the tile is unsupported across most of its area and will eventually crack under normal load. A hollow sound when tapped is the tell.
Missing movement joints cause tenting — tiles lifting off the screed in a ridge. That is not a cracking problem to patch; it is a floor that needs joints cut into it before it is re-laid.
Replacing a cracked tile
- Check you have a matching tile. Attic stock from the original batch. A tile bought later will differ in shade, which is why keeping spares matters more than any repair technique.
- Rake out the grout around it. A grout rake or oscillating tool, all four joints, full depth. This isolates the tile so breaking it does not chip its neighbours.
- Drill the centre, then break outward. Several holes in the middle with a tile bit, then work from the centre towards the edges with a chisel. Never start at the edge.
- Scrape the bed back to a flat substrate. All old adhesive removed. Any ridge left behind will hold the new tile proud of the floor.
- Comb fresh adhesive and back-butter the tile. Full coverage, not dabs. The void that caused the original crack is the failure to avoid repeating.
- Set to the level of its neighbours and leave it. Check with a straightedge across the surrounding tiles, then do not walk on it while it cures.
- Grout to match and seal if cementitious. New grout dries lighter than aged grout; expect it to blend over a few weeks rather than immediately.
Repair rather than replace — when it works
- A hairline crack in a low-traffic area — Colour-matched epoxy filler, worked in and levelled flush. Visible close up, acceptable at standing height.
- A chipped edge or corner — Epoxy repair paste tinted to the tile. On a full body tile the chip is barely visible anyway.
- A cracked wall tile behind a fixture — Fill rather than replace, where removal risks damaging the waterproofing behind it.
- When you have no matching spare — A filled crack usually looks better than one tile in a visibly different shade.
- Not worth repairing: any wet area — A crack in a shower or wet room lets water into the substrate. Replace it.
- Not worth repairing: cracks in a line — That is structural movement. Fix the cause before touching the tiles.

Can a cracked tile be repaired without replacing it?
A hairline crack or a chipped edge can be filled with colour-matched epoxy and will pass at standing height. A cracked tile in a shower or wet room should always be replaced, because the crack lets water into the substrate behind.
How do I remove a broken tile without damaging the others?
Rake out the grout on all four sides first, then drill several holes in the centre of the tile and chisel outward from the middle. Starting at the edge transfers force into the neighbouring tile and chips it.
Why do my tiles keep cracking?
If cracks appear in a line, the substrate is moving and needs movement joints. If individual tiles crack with no impact, they are probably spot-bedded with voids underneath — tap them, and a hollow sound confirms it. Neither is fixed by replacing tiles.
Will a replacement tile match?
Only if it came from the original batch. Porcelain shade varies between firings, so a tile bought later will be visibly different. This is why keeping ten per cent as attic stock matters far more than any repair skill.
What causes tiles to tent or lift?
Missing movement joints. A large floor expands and contracts, and with nowhere to go the compression forces tiles upward off the screed. The floor needs joints cut in before re-laying; patching the lifted area alone will not hold.
